What started for me as a mere passing interest now seems to have acquired a life of its own. Not only does it provide me with a decent living, being engaged and working in my home business is something I actually enjoy doing. Nevertheless, reaching this point in my career does not mean I don’t appreciate the enormous difficulty a beginner might encounter when just starting out.
The search for a home based career is, more often than not, characterized by all kinds of frustration. In all honesty, it’s seldom the case that a well known successful business has not had its own initial teething problems. Searching out and eventually picking on a particular business or career is never an easy task. We usually discover this when we make the transition from being a casual observer to an active participant in the process.
Before we go through the tips on what to bear in mind before proceeding on our search, I would like to make a distinction between the terms “work from home” and “work at home” as they can sometimes describe different concepts. If you work from home, you could be actually employed by a company or corporation who, for reasons of convenience, require that you do the work for which you are employed from home. Large companies now realize there is enormous financial savings from using home-based agents. On the other hand, we have personal businesses, built on ideas and run from home with responsibility only to clients/customers and not employees.
The first to have in mind before we embark on any search is to have an expectation that is grounded in reality. If you are seeking an employment with a company that will provide you the flexibility of working from home, have the presence of mind to separate fantasy from reality. Reality in the amount of money to be realized from such an endeavor and reality in the level of skill needed to get such a job.
This is a point that does not get mentioned enough in many of the job sites offering information o the subject. With fantastic expectations as t he foundation of our search, the outcome is likely to find expression in unrealized dreams. We should go into the search knowing that expecting instant gratification falls in the category of fantasy. Any business idea that may be the result of our search will require hard work for its growth and eventual success. That should be our expectation in our bid to create a home-based career.
In any human Endeavour, the role of education can never be over-emphasized. This is also particularly true in establishing a solid home career. You have to be prepared to carry out extensive research on things like telecommuting and home-business. Although the direction of your research will be largely determined by your main interests (whether you seek home employment with a company or you wish to establish your own business),it will furnish with needed information such as how long and what you really need to achieve your goal.
Diligent research will eventually equip you in identifying job or home career advertisements with fraudulent intent. Allow me to wander a little as some advertisements can be quite amusing: a job description that requires absolutely no skill or experience. The simple truth is employers who hire telecommuters want skilled and experienced employees they can trust. These employees would need to be able to perform their jobs with little or no supervision. Adequate education on the subject of “home career” would enable you make informed decisions.
Regarding all your activities in your search for home employment, you need to carry out a periodic and systematic self-evaluation. If you are still searching, and you have made a lot of efforts, evaluate these efforts to see what the problem could be. Could the problem be your resume? Are you qualified for the job you seek? Is your marketing method in your home career faulty? Go back and sift through all your efforts to see what you are not doing right.
Finally, persistence has its own rewards. Initially, I thought making this point might be unnecessary but it’s been my experience that people sometimes tend to give up too soon. A lot of successful entrepreneurs will confess to you t hat if they had an idea their road to success would be such a long and arduous one, they would not have embarked on it. To achieve the desired result in your work from home program, resilience, as an attribute, is called for.
